How to Insulate Your Home

2 October 2019
How to Insulate Your Home

Around half of all your heat can escape if your home is not properly insulated. Instead of turning up the thermostat, get insulated! Below is a guide to some products you can use to help insulate your home, saving you hundreds on your energy bills, as well as an environmentally –friendly solution that reduces your home’s impact on the environment.

Insulate your flat roof

Insulating a flat roof can deliver real benefits, a warmer room in the winter and cooler in the summer as it works both ways.  You will also benefit from lower energy bills and improved carbon emissions!  You can insulate your flat roof by placing PlyDeck which is a composite insulation board intended for forming warm flat roof decks which will be finished with partially bonded built-up felt waterproofing systems. This insulation material is placed on top of the roof, rather than in-between the ceiling and the decking.  You can also use PIR insulation on flat roof applications, PIR insulation is a thermoset plastic produced as a foam.

Add acoustic insulation to absorb sound and to improve thermal performance

Acoustic insulation works to prevent sound from passing through rooms, walls, floors and ceilings. Acoustic insulation is sold in slab form and is made from a natural stone material. The product works by trapping sound waves and dampening vibrations. This product is easily trimmed to size and offers excellent fire resistance, repels water, is vapour permeable and is unlikely to rot. It has excellent sound absorption properties as well as improving thermal performance.  Being lightweight it makes installation very easy, as it is semi-rigid it can be friction fitted between timber studs as well as between floor joists. These products complement the plasterboard linings by absorbing airborne sound in the cavity and reducing reverberation.

Reduce heat loss through the insulation of cavity walls

The idea of cavity wall insulation is to reduce heat loss through a cavity wall by filling the air space with material that inhibits heat transfer.   Insulating your cavity walls will help you to heat your home more efficiently and will save you money in the process. Heat will always flow from a warm area to a cold area and in our colder months, the cooler it is outside, the faster the heat from your home will escape into the surrounding air. Usually the cavity wall is filled with glass fibre or rock wall slabs which can be easily cut to size and are light to handle. If you are not sure what material would work best for your cavity wall then just ask one of our experienced sales team members.

Insulate your loft or attic

Laying loft insulation on the average home can save a whopping amount of carbon dioxide a year and in addition can make a major dent in your bills. This is one of the most efficient energy savings options, it is cheap and simple and any person with no experience can do this. Why not try using foil insulation, it is a much newer and high-tech solution for insulation. It is a cost effective way of keeping the warmth in through the winter and excessive heat out during the summer months. Being lightweight makes the product easy to fix using conventional methods such a staples and timber battens.

We hope this guide helps you realise that insulating your home is fairly straightforward and as well as keeping the heat in and cost down on your household bills you are also doing your bit to help the environment.
