How to Install Trellis to a Fence or Wall

Trellis is popular amongst homeowners and garden enthusiasts because it is very versatile. It can add height to an existing fence increasing privacy, improving décor, hiding unsightly areas, dividing sections of the garden and/or providing a framework for climbing plants. If you’re wondering how to install trellis to a fence or wall, here are some helpful tips…

What You’ll Need

  • Trellis
  • Battens
  • Wall Plugs
  • Screws
  • Galvanised Nails
  • Hammer
  • Drill
  • Spirit Level
  • Tape Measure

Installing Trellis in Front of a Wall or Fence

When installing trellis in front of a wall or fence, you will need to leave some space in between if you want plants to grow behind it. To provide this space, you should mount the trellis to wooden battens, such as 50x50mm timber posts, which should be spaced out roughly 60cm apart. Start by fixing the battens to the wall/fence using screws and wall plugs and then use galvanised nails to install the trellis to the battens. Then you can plant your climbers below and watch them grow!

Installing Trellis On Top of A Fence

There are lots of styles available when choosing a trellis fence topper, including traditional square designs or a decorative scalloped shape, which are great for increasing privacy without blocking out too much light. If you’d like to install your trellis atop an existing fence, you will need to start by extending the existing posts to the desired height using wooden battens.

Fix your U brackets to the inside of each fence post/batten extension roughly halfway between where the trellis panel will go. Then you can slot the trellis into place and fix with screws through the U brackets. You may then want to paint or stain the trellis so that it matches the fence colour and preserves the wood

You can also install trellis as a standalone feature to create a striking display. If you’re struggling at any point with your trellis installation project, don’t be afraid to seek professional help to avoid any potentially dangerous mishaps.
