Build Your Own Playhouse

Lawsons offer a great range of playhouses and other garden buildings, along with an expert installation service that ensures a safe set-up. However, the one thing that could make having a playhouse even more exciting for your children is if you build it yourself. It could be a wonderful and very rewarding family project that lasts for years to come. All it takes some planning, the right tools and a little motivation! Oh and perhaps some nice weather.

Playhouses are a great way to help your child develop an appreciation for the outdoors and spark their imagination, resulting in hours of enjoyment.  Of course, it depends on your DIY skills but you’ll probably even have fun building it!

Gather the Materials

Before you start, you must decide on an appropriate location - it won’t be easy to move the playhouse once you’ve built it.  Gather all of the required materials and tools. For the windows, you must have safety in mind! It’s best to fit either safety glass or Perspex, to make it more child friendly. You should also consider investing in a non-toxic wood treatment. Make sure you build the playhouse on a stable, level foundation such as concrete or decking.

Add Some Personality

Once the playhouse is finished, why not harness your families’ creativity and add some special enhancements. For example, you could add shelves and cupboards on the inside to keep it tidy, or complement the windows with window boxes for some flower pots. Painting the wood will not only boost the appearance of the playhouse, it will also protect it from rot.

Look for Inspiration

If you’re looking for some inspiration, take a look at the images below. This striking, two-storey playhouse was built by one of our customers, Mario Olejnik, with some of our used pallets. You can see the superb transformation from seemingly impractical bits of wood to a wonderful little house in the garden. After the build, the wood was beautifully painted to add a personal touch and give the playhouse a cottage feel.

Good luck with your playhouse project and please feel free to send us pictures of your own finished result. We’d love to see what you can do when you put your mind to it!
