Trellis has a variety of applications in a garden. It can hide unattractive areas, like a compost heap; provide support for climbing plants; add height to an prevailing fence; or act as a partition between yours and your neighbour’s gardens. Depending on its purpose, there are different ways to install trellis and the process is fairly simple, even if you’re a novice. When installing trellis you will need the following items:
- Trellis
- Tape Measure
- Spirit level
- Power drill and screws
- Hammer and nails
- Timber posts
Wall mounted trellis must allow enough room for plants to grow between it and the wall. With that said, the trellis should be installed to battens, which can be mounted to the wall using screws and wall plugs or a masonry drill. The number of battens you need is determined by the size of the wall and the length should match the length of the trellis. Please ensure that the bottom batten is at least 6 inches higher than the damp proof course. If you don’t, your new trellis could eventually penetrate damp into your home, leading to mould and a variety of health problems amongst your family.
Fixing trellis to a fence is a similar process, although you might not need battens. Depending on the type of fence you have, it might be possible for you to install the trellis directly to the fence panel. Freestanding trellis makes for a fantastic decorative fence, but is a little trickier to install. This is because you will need strong posts fixed into the ground if you want it to stand up indefinitely.
