How to Use Topsoil for Winter

Winter is coming! This means shorter days, dropping temperatures and less time out enjoying our gardens. However, at this time of year, it is important to prepare your garden as best you can for the frosty weather ahead. One of the best ways to do this is by spreading a final layer of topsoil over your lawn.

Throughout the winter, important nutrients are lost from the top layers of soil by the harsh weather conditions. ‘Top dressing’ your garden in the autumn will help to protect your grass over the cold winter months. By adding a fresh layer of topsoil now, you will be providing all of the vital vitamins and minerals your lawn needs to survive until the spring.

While there is still adequate daylight to work in, and before the frost begins to spread, pop on your gardening gloves and follow our topsoil tips below…

How to add topsoil to your lawn:

By placing fresh topsoil on your grass now, you will be helping to give it a strong start for next year. Follow these steps to prepare your garden for winter:

  1. Start by using a garden fork to create drainage holes across your lawn.
  2. Once you have an even spread of holes across your grass, you can then apply your top dressing. Only a very fine layer of topsoil is required. Too much will obscure areas of the grass, which could cause bald patches. Simply use enough soil to cover the new drainage holes.
  3. It is important to choose loose and screened topsoil that includes sand. This will ensure that it falls evenly into the holes and allows adequate water to seep through to the roots. We can deliver bulk bagged topsoil and other loose topsoil varieties directly to your home, to help make your garden maintenance as easy as possible.
  4. Once you have added your topsoil, it is a good idea to add an autumn and winter lawn feed, to help strengthen the roots and protect the grass.
