4 Top Tips for Refreshing Your Fence This Summer

During the winter months, it is likely that your garden has been subject to the fury of Mother Nature. Your lovely wooden fence may be looking a bit worse for wear, but completely replacing it will be costly and inconvenient. That’s why we have put together some tips to help ensure your fence looks great again - without the need for a new one - just in time for the sunshine.

Evaluate the Damage

If your fence is too far gone, there’s no point spending money on the tools required to freshen it up. However, if there’s a minimal amount of rot or it just needs a new lick of paint then you won’t have to replace the whole thing. Make sure you assess the damage first and foremost.

Give Your Fence a Wash

The method you use to clean your fence will depend on how unclean it has become. If you’re hoping to remove years of mould growth, you’ll likely need the help of a pressure washer. Make sure you don’t set the pressure too high because you can actually damage the wood. If, on the other hand, you just need to remove dirt or peeling paint, simple water will get the job done.

Replace Individual Panels

A small amount of rotting or splitting can be easily dealt with by replacing individual panels. This will prevent the problem from spreading and is a more affordable option than replacing the entire fence.

Paint Your Fence

Painting your fence is the easiest way to freshen it up, but make sure you do this on a day when the weather forecast is clear. Throw on some old clothes and cover up the flowers and shrubbery near the fence with a dust sheet, so that they don’t get splashed with paint. Paint will protect your fence from the elements.

Before making any changes to your fencing, small or large, you should take the time to speak to your neighbours and ensure both parties are happy with your plans.
